The plan of the majalis, and the questions that followed

1:47:36 · watch the session

15sessions planned
174sessions delivered

The shaykh laid out a condensed course: two or three preliminaries, then four sessions each for the three core subjects. It has since run to a hundred and seventy four. Read the plan below as the skeleton of the whole series, not as its length.

The preliminaries2 to 3 sessions

Three stations that come before the method itself.

01

Obstacles on the road, and what blocks benefit

What stops a person benefiting from the path of fiqh al-nafs at all. At the head of the list: the psychological self-deceptions, al-mukhada'at.

02

The history of the soul outside Islam

How earlier civilizations and religions handled the human soul: the philosophers of the East, the Greeks, the Romans. Then the link from those old ideas to what surfaces today in anime and in self-development courses.

03

The history of the soul among Muslims

The schools of Muslim scholars on the soul and its purification, and the inherited treasures most people this century have never opened.

The core triad4 sessions each

Three subjects that run in parallel, each named from the Qur’an. Together they are the whole method: how you think, what you are, and how you meet other people.

Iqra · Read

The fiqh of thinking: the mind, and how to grasp things correctly.

  • Protecting the mind from being a casualty of media steering, of whatever other people forward to you
  • The primary axioms of the intellect, traced back to their origin in fitrah
  • Finding the correct reference point for verifying that thought is sound, and setting the vision of Islam beside the other schools

Wa nafsin · And the soul

Going down into the human soul and taking its reality apart, practically.

  • The fiqh of createdness: weakness, need, poverty, deficiency, and how understanding this treats a great deal of psychological pain
  • Dealing with pain, and accepting the problem of evil
  • The fiqh of expression: how a person states himself and his needs correctly
  • Seeing clearly the things placed at your service and the blessings around you: the soul itself, the horizons, other souls
  • The fiqh of the day's and the night's work: getting out of the least possible amount of ordered, useful action

Li-ta'arafu · That you may know one another

How to deal with the other, and how to live in a society.

  • An entrance to morals and manners, and why the other person's existence matters in your life
  • The fiqh of disagreement, of dialogue, of listening well, of silence
  • The fiqh of calling, of speech, of argument
  • The fiqh of dispute, and the fiqh of mercy toward others

The questions from the floor35 questions

Everything asked at the end of the first session, with the shaykh’s answers. Grouped by what they are actually about, so you can find yours.

Getting the benefit

05

Does a person actually change for the better after studying fiqh al-nafs?

Yes. It helps you understand the world and its laws as its Creator intended, which changes how you see yourself, other people, and your relation with Allah.

Its distinction is honest confrontation with the self plus a complete practical method, and that leaves a deep contentment. Some people past fifty and sixty described it as being born again.

15

How do we get real benefit from these sessions?

Total attention: clear the time, remove distractions completely while listening.

Write. Keep a notebook and pen for the benefits and the assignments.

Keep a separate applications notebook: pages for the practical duties from each lesson, followed up one by one.

Do the assignments, and keep pace with the interactive groups.

09

Will this condensed course have assignments and work?

Yes, many: readings, practical applications, continuous practice.

Joining the "suhbat fiqh al-nafs" groups makes recording the benefits and tracking the duties easier.

10

Does this condensed version add anything over the earlier short sessions?

Yes, more detail. The earlier meetings were short introductions then open consultations; these sessions are dedicated to presenting the material itself, in detail and at greater breadth.

06

For someone with shari'ah training, does the condensed course replace the full ones?

A student of knowledge who can connect issues and close his own gaps will benefit greatly from the condensed course.

The golden advice: start with this and hold to it. If afterward you find a pressing need for fine detail found only in the full courses, register then. Otherwise this suffices.

22

In our place, would you stick to the free summary or pay for the full course?

Begin with the summary that is available now. Complete it, and only if you then feel a real need for detail available nowhere else, register for the long course.

20

Should I register while already in the Bina' Manhaji program?

He considers fiqh al-nafs foundational and complementary to other sciences; scheduling is your own call.

Bina' Manhaji is excellent, and he routinely refers people to such programs rather than claiming to encompass every science.

29

Is this useful beyond the psychological side of life?

Certainly. Fiqh al-nafs is a whole way of living according to the divine patterns: conduct, daily work, worship, marriage, dealing with others.

Mental health

04

Is this suitable for someone with OCD?

Not advised if the condition is advanced enough to block concentration, or if it makes the person dwell on his symptoms instead of benefiting. Close that door and work with the specialist or doctor.

Advised if the person can hold the balance and benefit from the material and its applications without surrendering to the compulsive thinking. Diagnosed cases have benefited a great deal from the "Ma'a Nafsi" program.

30

I notice abnormal symptoms in myself. Course, or doctor?

See a psychiatrist first. That step comes before any course or any knowledge.

35

Could the section on other religions harm someone with waswas by raising doubts?

It could, if it came at the beginning. It is placed at the very end of the material, after the student has been founded intellectually and psychologically enough to protect himself.

03

Is psychological change, the emptying out, where it starts?

Emptying and change are an original part of the "Wa nafsin" material and its main axes; the detailed answer sits inside the method.

Sources and the learning path

12

How do I study fiqh al-nafs systematically, self-taught?

Start with this condensed course, to build a clear methodological faculty for receiving revelation's texts and understanding the soul, before reading other books.

Return to the detailed letter addressed to those who want to study the human soul, available on the channel.

26

How do academic psychology students connect their field to fiqh al-nafs?

Study fiqh al-nafs first, to build a clear methodological faculty that lets you receive revelation's texts and understand the vocabulary from an authentically Islamic reference, before engaging Western academic theory.

27

Why is this science so under-published, and how do we reach its sources?

The shortfall comes from an inferiority complex and epistemic dependence on the West among those working in the Islamic field.

Some of the work is reachable: the Islamic Psychologists Association link on the channel, the IIIT series introducing the heritage, and the lectures of Dr Khalid Jabir.

11

If revelation is sufficient, why don't we feel that in today's scholars?

The dominant culture: the Western epistemic model rules, and many people, including the religious and the callers, fall under it.

Strain and forced reconciliation: some preachers work hard to dress Western concepts in Islamic color.

Traditional teaching: students grow inside narrow frames that never let them study the soul or treat reality from revelation directly.

The inferiority complex and ignorance of the heritage: a felt inadequacy before Western output, with severe neglect in digging out the deep treasures we already have.

21

I'm a psychologist in Egypt. Whom do you recommend learning from?

Shaykh Wajdan al-Ali: his existential presentation overlaps deeply with fiqh al-nafs.

Brother Hilmi: excellent writing in this area, though not published under the name fiqh al-nafs.

Dr Sharif Tahir: distinguished, valuable material on childhood and upbringing.

25

I'm from Morocco. How do I learn more?

Watch the first two episodes of the "Ma'a Nafsi" program on YouTube; they summarize the core idea in about half an hour.

Then the shaykh's detailed interview with "al-Akh al-Siddiq".

07

I want to raise my children well. Where do I start?

Begin with this current summary, alongside the weekly tarbiyah groups and sessions streamed live on YouTube.

16

Is there a distilled set of counsels we can follow?

He pointed to two posts on the channel, one titled "Khulasah" and another link titled "al-Nafs", and recalled the Prophet's counsel to the man who asked him: do not become angry.

The course and registration

24

Can I register for "Wa nafsin" without doing "Iqra" first?

Possible, but not advised at all. The founding standards and terms established in "Iqra" are passed over and built on quickly in "Wa nafsin", and without them the student feels scattered and estranged.

31

Can someone who never registered for "Iqra" attend the public stream?

Yes, the stream is open to everyone. But attending "Iqra" and keeping the order of priorities remains the best way to get the most from it.

23

How often does a new cohort open?

It takes a long time. After "Iqra" finishes there is a wait of roughly two to three weeks for a new section, and usually about six months before a following cohort.

08

Will the conversational format continue in these sessions?

No. There will be no spontaneous dialogue sessions with a host as before. The shaykh presents the material himself in an ordered way to deliver as much as possible, then opens the floor for comments and questions at the end.

18

How do I register for the course?

Contact the coordinating sisters directly; their handles are on the channel.

01

We have no representative in Algeria. What do we do?

Take it to the coordinating sister or the registration supervisors through the handles set up for this.

02

We want the updated course notes.

The updated notes have not been revised yet and are not currently available.

19

A suggestion: publicize this, most people don't know it exists.

The announcements and material are already published. He does his part; making it reach people is with Allah.

28

Will the material be made available through the masjid?

He acknowledged overlooking telling the masjid congregation that he would be broadcasting, and had contacted brother Mu'adh to arrange availability on the masjid's page if they wish.

Opinions and the personal

17

What do you think of Dr Khalid al-Jabir's material?

Strongly recommends him: "any material of his, listen to it", expressing open partiality and great love for his work.

33

What about Dr Jasim al-Mutawwa?

His work on the marriage file is excellent and very successful. The shaykh holds some reservations about his material on upbringing.

14

What about Rashad Najih?

Answered briefly: "I am not at ease with his presentation."

13

How do I book a consultation with you?

He excuses himself entirely from private consultations and therapy sessions. After a previous brain hemorrhage he is medically barred from exerting himself, and such sessions demand effort he cannot bear now.

32

Do you miss Iraq? Could you visit Mosul?

He misses Iraq and every place he lived: Iraq, Kuwait, Khobar, Jordan. He holds that true belonging is to Allah, and living in His wide earth.

The obstacles are security, having been targeted before for fighting destructive ideas, and medical, being currently barred from travel after the hemorrhage.

34

How do we join the "Li-taskunu ilayha" initiative?

It will be announced soon. It eases marriage by studying applicants' files from both sides carefully and matching them on how they define themselves.

By Allah's grace it is very successful; the marriages made through it are living in calm and contentment.
